Video: Outlook on Asian-Kiwi stories Chye-Ling Huang

Chye-Ling Huang, director of bilingual play Roots [根], talks about the state of Asian-New Zealand stories in the arts.

Asian-Kiwi stories in the arts

“I think it’s only going to get more bombastic and political. We are seeing less shows that are simply representation, and more shows that are actively attacking problems.

“We’re becoming braver to put ourselves on stage, and push the boundaries politically, and be a bit more contentious, and be a bit more outspoken.

“It’s my belief that we’ll get to a point where there’s lots of practitioners doing all levels of [things]. I really want to do Shakespeare with an all-Asian cast one day. Or Chekov, or anything mainstream, but casted inclusive.

“It’s going to take time, but it’s exciting.”
